How Do You Keep a Porta Potty Safe in High Wind?

Spring gusts and dust storms are part of life in southeast New Mexico. A few steps keep units upright and usable.

Can wind tip over a porta potty?

Strong wind can tip over an empty or lightly used porta potty because a standard unit weighs only about 175 pounds empty and stands over 7 feet tall. Units on open lots, ridges and fresh pads are most at risk during spring gusts and storm outflows.

How are units anchored?

Units are anchored with ground stakes through the base, straps to a fence or fixed object, or by grouping units side by side and strapping them together. On concrete, units are strapped to a fixed point. Our drivers stake units on open lots at delivery.

Where should units go on a windy site?

On a windy site, place porta potties on the lee side of a building, office trailer or container, with the door facing away from the prevailing wind. Avoid ridgelines and the edges of open pads. Grouping two or more units side by side and strapping them together also adds stability.

What should I do if a unit tips over?

If a unit tips over, keep people away, do not try to lift it, and call (575) 213-5055. We send a truck to clean the area and replace the unit, usually the same day in Carlsbad. Spills are cleaned before a new unit is set.

Does dust affect the inside?

Dust storms coat porta potty interiors, clog sanitizer pumps and blow grit into the tank vent. Keep doors latched when units are not in use, and ask for an extra service visit after a major dust event. The technician wipes surfaces, clears the vent and checks the latch and hinges.
