What is a portable handwashing station?
A portable handwashing station is a free-standing sink with a foot pump, a fresh-water tank, a gray-water tank, a soap dispenser and a paper towel holder. Two people can wash at once on a 2-sink station. The station needs no hose or power and is refilled on each service visit.
- Foot pump keeps hands off the faucet
- About 34 gallons of fresh water, about 400 washes
- Separate gray-water tank, emptied at service
- Soap and towels restocked every visit
When do you need a handwashing station?
You need a handwashing station whenever food is served, when workers handle concrete, chemicals or lead, and on farm jobs with hand labor. OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on construction jobs where workers handle harmful materials, and OSHA 1928.110 requires 1 handwashing facility per 20 field workers.
| Setting | Rule or recommendation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Construction with harmful materials | Washing facilities near the work | OSHA 1926.51(f) |
| Farm field work, 11+ hand laborers | 1 toilet + 1 handwash per 20 workers within a ¼-mile walk | OSHA 1928.110 |
| Events with food | 1 station per food line, plus 1 per 4 toilets | Our recommendation |
| Weddings and parties | 1 station per 4 toilets | Our recommendation |
Where should handwashing stations go?
Handwashing stations go within a few steps of the porta potty doors so guests wash on the way out. Put a second station at the food line or serving area. Each station needs a level spot about 3 by 3 feet that the service truck can reach to refill water and pump gray water.
The porta potty calculator adds stations automatically when you mark food as served.
Handwashing Stations: questions before you book
Do your porta potties come with a sink?
The standard porta potty has hand sanitizer but no sink. Choose a standard unit with a sink inside, a deluxe flushing unit with a sink, or a separate handwashing station.
How much is a handwashing station?
A 2-sink handwashing station for a weekend event in Carlsbad starts at $125 plus tax with delivery and pickup when booked with porta potties. Monthly stations are quoted with weekly refills.
Do you supply soap and paper towels?
Every handwashing station arrives with soap and paper towels, and each service visit refills them. Standard porta potties include toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Does the station need a water hose?
The station carries its own fresh-water tank, so no hose is needed. The service truck refills the tank and pumps the gray water at each visit.
Can stations freeze in winter?
Water lines on a station can freeze on hard-freeze nights. In winter we add a food-safe antifreeze plan or recommend sanitizer-only setups for nights forecast below about 28°F.
