How many porta potties do I need for my event?
You need about 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for a 4-hour event. A 100-guest, 5-hour party needs 3 units, and a 200-guest, 8-hour event needs 6. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served, and 1 handwashing station per 4 toilets when food is served.
| Guests | Up to 2 hrs | Up to 4 hrs | Up to 6 hrs | Up to 8 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| 150 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| 200 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 250 | 3 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
| 300 | 3 | 5 | 7 | 8 |
| 400 | 4 | 7 | 9 | 10 |
| 500 | 5 | 8 | 11 | 12 |
Ivan Rental Works planning chart for standard units, based on our servicing experience. It is a recommendation, not a legal rule. Over 500 guests, the chart scales in proportion to the 500-guest row.
How do you adjust the count for alcohol, food and long events?
Start with the chart number, then add whole units. If the chart says 5 units and alcohol is served, add 2 units, because 1 unit is added for every 4 and 5 ÷ 4 rounds up to 2. If food is served, add 1 handwashing station for every 4 toilets. Events over 8 hours add a mid-event service visit.
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, open bar, dinner
- Chart, 150 guests at the 6-hour column: 4 units.
- Open bar: 4 ÷ 4 = 1, so add 1 unit → 5 units.
- Dinner served: 5 toilets ÷ 4 = 1.25, round up → 2 handwashing stations.
- Private wedding: no legal accessible minimum, but we recommend 1 accessible unit when older guests attend.
How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers legally needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c). Crews over 20 need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Ivan Rental Works recommends 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service, so a 25-person crew gets 3 units.

How many accessible units does a public event need?
A public event needs at least 5% of the porta potties in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, and never fewer than 1 per cluster, under the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. A 20-unit cluster needs 1 accessible unit; a 30-unit cluster needs 2. Private parties have no legal minimum.
